Giving Starts With Grace

"Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work."

-2 Corinthians 9:7–8

Everything we have comes from God. He is the One who "supplies seed to the sower and bread for food" (2 Corinthians 9:10). We don't give to earn His favor or to put Him in our debt. In Christ, His favor is already ours, by grace alone, through faith alone. So giving doesn't start with us. It starts with a sovereign, generous God who has given us everything we need, and gave His Son for our salvation. Our giving is a response to what He has already done.
